Amy Slavensky Secures Major Support from CTA, CFT, CSEA, and the California Democratic Party’s Pre-Endorsement in Race for California’s 7th Assembly District

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SACRAMENTO, CA—Today, public educator Amy Slavensky announced unanimous pre-endorsement from the California Democratic Party for her campaign for California’s 7th Assembly District, currently represented by Republican Assemblymember Josh Hoover. This landmark show of support from the Democratic Party comes on the heels of critical endorsements from the California Teachers Association (CTA), the California School Employees Association (CSEA), the California Federation of Teachers (CFT), the California Democratic Legislative Women’s Caucus, and sitting elected officials.

“Voters are ready for a representative who shares their priorities—strong public schools, affordable healthcare, lower costs of living—and better representation than a passive Republican incumbent who is more interested in protecting his seat than people who want an advocate,” said Amy Slavensky. “I’ve served California families my whole life as a teacher and educational leader. It is a disservice that Hoover is shying away from the issues that are putting a good life out of reach for too many. I’m committed to working alongside partners in labor and families in my district to build a better California that works for everybody.”

“Amy Slavensky began her career in public school education as a teacher and CTA member. She raised a family on a teacher's salary and has worked at every level of public education during her 40-year career to advocate and improve conditions for teachers, students, and their families. That's why our union has recommended Amy for State Assembly,” said David B. Goldberg, President of the California Teachers Association. “California educators deserve an ally who will proactively support the needs and interests of teachers, counselors, special education specialists, school nurses—and we know Amy is prepared to do that.”

“The California School Employees Association and our quarter million members proudly endorse Amy Slavensky for State Assembly,” said CSEA Association President Adam Weinberger. “With 40 years in public school education, Amy’s record reflects a deep commitment to service and to the communities our schools serve. We know she will be a strong advocate for the classified employees who work every day to keep California’s schools running, and for our students.”

"We are endorsing Amy for State Assembly because she knows firsthand what teachers, school support staff, and community college faculty and staff across the state are facing,” said CFT President Jeff Freitas. “Amy’s leadership and experience are needed to improve and strengthen our public schools and colleges, and go to bat on other urgent issues impacting our members, like unaffordable healthcare, housing, and childcare."

“Women currently make up 49 percent of the legislature, and have five women serving as Constitutional Officers,” said State Assembly Majority Leader Cecelia Aguiar-Curry, California Democratic Legislative Women’s Caucus Chair. “While we have achieved gender parity in the State Senate, we have not yet achieved full gender parity across the legislature and are committed to continuing to grow our representation with leaders like you. The communities of the 7th Assembly District deserve your strong voice in Sacramento.”

Endorsement from lead education unions also builds campaign momentum from December’s SEIU and California Women’s List endorsements
