Early spend spells trouble for Assembly District 7’s incumbent

SACRAMENTO, CA—This weekend, a dark money group funded by the Republican Party and big corporations spent five figures spreading lies about Assemblymember Josh Hoover’s opponent to hide from his record of cutting funding for students and teachers in AD 7. This early spending by the incumbent’s supporters proves that the race for Assembly District 7 is a true toss-up and one of the most competitive Assembly races in California. 

Hoover has repeatedly voted against increasing per student funding four times (SB 101,  [6/15/2023], SB 101 [6/13/2025], AB 109 [6/15/2026], AB 157 [8/29/2024]). School districts across California are seeing math and reading scores dip as federal COVID funding expires. It’s resulted in layoffs, cuts in services, programs, and materials that are essential for helping children catch up after severe learning disruptions during the pandemic. 

“Improving student outcomes in math and reading has always been and will be a top priority, but every teacher knows that improvement doesn’t come overnight, or even over one year. We need to meet every child where they are and have the means to do so, and not just in the good years,” said Amy Slavensky. “My education plan does exactly that by paying teachers what they deserve, heading off massive federal cuts, improving student performance with stronger resources for teachers to diagnose learning difficulties and provide intervention support in the classroom, and ensuring oversight so that every dollar spent makes a positive impact on our children’s education and future.” 

In addition to voting against school funding, Hoover also voted against other education bills that would have directly improved school and student performance, including more oversight of charter schools (AB 84) and adding mandatory kindergarten to the state education curriculum (AB 2226). 

“If Hoover was truly interested in raising our children’s reading and math scores, he would have joined the effort to hold our schools to the highest standard and give children the headstart they deserve with kindergarten,” said Amy Slavensky. “So many parents I’ve met see a lot of talk but no action from him when the rubber meets the road. We deserve better, and that’s why I’m running.”
