National Union of Healthcare Workers Endorses Amy Slavensky for California Assembly District 7

SACRAMENTO, CA—Today, the National Union of Healthcare Workers (NUHW) endorsed Amy Slavensky in the race for Assembly District 7. This is a significant show of support in an election cycle where healthcare is a defining voter issue. Healthcare still remains a top issue for District 7 voters, with looming $30 billion in cuts to Medi-Cal from HR 1 that will impact the 174,052 District 7 residents who are eligible for Medi-Cal.

Amy’s robust support from healthcare workers stands in contrast to Assemblymember Hoover’s record. Hoover voted against funding to lower health insurance rate increases (AB 109), keeping distressed hospitals open and delaying cuts to clinics (AB 109), and was notably absent or voted against bills aimed at preserving access to Medi-Cal for millions of Californians after deep federal cuts (AB 100, AB 2208, AB 116).

“Our 19,000 members are bracing for the worst of President Trump's budget bill, which threatens to leave millions of Californians with no health insurance and make it even harder for more state residents to afford the care their plans provide,” said NUHW President Emeritus Sal Rosselli. “With so much at stake, we are proud to endorse Amy Slavensky because she will fight for her constituents to be able to access affordable health care and support caregivers in having the resources they need to best serve their patients.“

“Healthcare and mental health professionals are essential, and they need to be recognized and supported as such by their employers and our healthcare policies,” said Amy Slavensky. “I’ve said it before, and I will say it again: without our health, nothing else matters. NUHW members are the backbone of so many healthcare workers and professionals in our hospitals and homes in Sacramento County, and I will continue to stand alongside them in demanding better support for them and  quality healthcare for all.”

Sacramento County has been a flashpoint for healthcare worker activations in 2026, with chronic understaffing, unmanageable workloads, and AI being central issues. Kaiser Permanente nurses, therapists, and other healthcare workers went on strike in February, and caregivers, hospice workers, and home health service providers with Sutter Health hosted an information picket in April
